|When:||1st day of Lent (early February to early March)|
Ash Wednesday is the first day of the penitential season of Lent. Lent is the period preceding Easter and because Easter is a moveable feast, Lent also varies in date; Ash Wednesday falls early-February to early-March. After the pancake eating and vigorous sports of Shrove Tuesday (the day before) Ash Wednesday was traditionally a time for repentance and in the Catholic church today, penitents’ foreheads are still marked with an ash cross.
In 2018 Ash Wednesday falls on 14th February.
