This was a boat race with a difference – all the vessels used were home made and crewed by teams in fancy dress. It was over a ten mile stretch of the Kennett & Avon Canal starting at Hungerford and ending at Newbury, with staggered starting times and an official finishing time of 3.30. Each year had a different theme so you might get superheroes or musicians or film stars propelling their craft – prizes were given for costumes, speed (fastest and slowest!) and the best vessel. There were family friendly stalls and entertainments in the park near the finishing line.
Helpful Hints
In 2023 it should have been on Monday May 1st but currently new organisers are being sought to carry the event into the future and there are no plans for the event to take place that I’be spotted. If you hear any news of future plans please let me know!

Here at calendarcustoms we have no connection to the running of the Crafty Craft Race,and at the moment the event’s own website is being reconstructed without any obvious links other than for people who want to compete in the race. However, there is a Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/NewburyCraftyCraft/ which is for the event (it ends at Newbury) so I’d advise asking on their Community messages as somebody on there should know.
