When: | 1st Tuesday in August |
Time: | 2pm |
The oldest surviving gooseberry show in the country takes place each August at Egton Bridge, near Whitby. World Record breaking gooseberries are shown at this event – the heaviest berries are the winners with weights of up to 62g. There are classes for different varieties of berry (red, yellow, green and white) and for “twins” when two berries share a single stalk. The fruit is very carefully weighed on special scales by the Gooseberry Society committee members, and sometimes a feather is used to steady the swinging scale pan until a result is clearly shown. The eligible berries’ weights and varieties are recorded during the morning session, then the hard work of collating all the information begins before the winners are labelled up for viewing during the afternoon. While many of the competitors are local, people travel from all over the country to take part.
Helpful Hints
