Jones’ Ale Soulcakers were a Chester based group who performed a traditional Cheshire souling play. Originally taking place in late October and November each year, the season shifted to early December for a number of years. Souling is a type of mumming with the usual hero/combat folk play involving revival of one of the combatants by a doctor, but with the addition of a wild hobby horse; these plays are associated with theo period around All Souls Day, hence the name of the group. Jones’ Ale were revivalist team who had been performing for 40 years and attracted a large crowd!

Helpful Hints

The group performed at various pubs in the City of Chester. In 2019 they performed on Saturday December 7th; in 2022 the tour was postponed owing to lack of available participants due to illness and any future dates are yet to be announced. Currently it appears that they’re not performing- let me know if you hear different!
