The Sheriffs Ride at Lichfield is a boundary marking custom – around 100 smartly turned-out horsemen and women accompany the Sheriff on a sixteen mile trek around the parish starting from the Guildhall at 10.30. The officials of the party only assemble in front of the Guildhall for brief speeches and toasts before joining the main cavalcade on The Friary.Races take place in the afternoon and the cavalcade returns to town by around 6pm to be met by the Sword and Mace bearers who escort the company back to the Guildhall to be greeted by the Dean of the Cathedral. The custom dates back to the Sixteenth Century when the town was given a charter with the right to appoint its own Sheriff.
Helpful Hints
In 2024 it should be on Saturday 7th September (check with the Council for full details if you intend to take part- spectators can just turn up).
Anyone can watch for free, but if you want to take part entry will cost £35 and you’ll need a mount!
