Skipping

Sussex was famed for its tradition of skipping with long ropes on Good Friday – it used to happen at Brighton, Lewes and other locations but now the only survivor takes place outside the Anchor at Ringmer(from 2018-2022 it was at the  Ram Inn at Firle and until 2018 it was at the Rose Cottage at Alciston). It’s turned into a local celebration with traditional music and morris dancing as well as good food and drink. Local sides Knots of May, Blackpowder Morris and Chanctonbury Ring Morris perform (whatever the weather!) before getting the ropes out for all to join in the skipping.

Helpful Hints

In 2025 it should be on Friday 18th April.

The Anchor was a new location for 2023 and hosted again in 2024.
