Curfew

When Christ Church College was founded it originally housed 101 students, and today  Great Tom the Cathedral bell still rings 101 times every night to alert the students of  the college to return or they’ll be locked out for the night! The purpose of a curfew is to remind residents that they should cover up their fires and get to bed and one of the handful of places to retain the custom is Oxford. It rings at five past nine each night (that’s 9pm in old Oxford time!).
