Devon: National Sandcastle Competition

Where: Formerly at Westward Ho!, Devon at the Beach
When: Formerly A Sunday in June,July or August
Time: Formerly from 12 noon with judging at 4.30

Sandcastle competitions take place at beaches all around the UK all summer long; the event in Devon is a charity fundraiser for the local hospice which was perhaps the most widely known and is officially the “National” contest of this type. It was well established for over 15 years and moved venue from nearby Woolacombe to Croyde then Westward Ho! so visitors need to be sure to turn up at the right place! Teams of up to six competitors have three hours in which to build their structures and seven square metres of sand to use. Crowds of up to 10,000 are likely to attend and all ages are welcome, with classes for adults and children. In 2019 the event moved down the coast to Westward Ho!

Helpful Hints

Westward Ho! has a sandy beach (obviously!) and there are other entertainments and music on site. The new venue for the event was used in 2019 (it used to be held on Woolacombe beach just up the road, then Croyde).

The event was having a rest for 2015; then, after a gap of several years, a competition was held at Westward Ho! in 2019 but naturally ceased the next year due to covid and future plans are yet to be announced.
