The Bard

William Shakespeare’s birthday is celebrated every April in his home town of Stratford upon Avon. The Bard was born in 1564 and this event has been held for many years on the Saturday nearest his birthdate. Expect a large procession of well-wishers bearing posies, a fancy-dress parade of well known characters from his plays, flag waving, wreath laying at the church where he is buried (Holy Trinity Church), folk dancing and street entertainment, and of course lots of thespians. The Head Boy of the local school carries a new Quill in the parade, so that the Bard’s tomb receives a new pen.

Helpful Hints

Crowds can be huge – use the Park and Ride to get into town.

In 2024 it should be on Saturday April 20th with further celebrations on the Sunday (check website link below for details).
