St Germans May Tree Fair

Where: Saturday at the Eliot Arms, Sunday at the Recreation Field, village centre & Eliot Arms
When: Spring Bank Holiday Weekend
Time: Saturday 9pm onwards, Sunday 11 am.

The May Tree Fair at St Germans is a traditional annual celebration of the coming of summer, which was revived in 2012. Originally held around the Old Nut Tree (sadly deceased), today’s villagers carry their new nut tree though the streets in a colourful and noisy procession, with other events like tug of war and maypole dancing on the recreation ground in the morning and stalls & activities outside the Eliot Arms in the afternoon. The Saturday evening usually sees the election of a typically Cornish Mock Mayor and Mayoress at the pub, while the procession and other entertainments follow during the Sunday – and as it’s held over the long Spring Bank Holiday Weekend, there’s a day to recover on the Monday.

Helpful Hints

In 2024 it should be on Sunday 26th May with additional activities over the whole weekend including music on Saturday evening. Check the Facebook link below for updates and full details- timings may be flexible. The Recreation Ground where the fair is held isn’t on maps- but it’s easily found up a trackway just north of the railway arch.

All are welcome to bedeck themselves with oak leaves and join in the procession making lots of noise!
