Cheeserolling 2013

Cheeserolling at Stilton is a tradition which started in the mid-twentieth century and was thought up in the pub! It was originally held at Easter but was later fixed to May Day Bank Holiday Monday and has now moved to the Spring Bank Holiday weekend at the end of the month. It’s a race with teams of 4 people rolling their wooden mock-cheese along the course – there will be a new route for 2024 from the Pavilion whereas it used to be between the Bell Inn and the crossroads of Fen Street / Church Street, and there will be some new features and classes for the revived event. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the winners receive a real Stilton cheese as well as a trophy and beer. You can expect fancy dress and a fun atmosphere – but not the hazards of the Coopers Hill cheeserolling races held at the precipitous course in Gloucestershire. There should be plenty of musicians and entertainers on the day, and of course plenty of food & drink.

Helpful Hints

In 2024 it should be on Sunday 26th May.

The popular event took a break in 2018 due to falling numbers of entrants and the need for a new team to run it and hasn’t happened since until the much anticipated revival in 2024.
