A century or so ago, it was common across the country for churches to organise a walking day when groups such as Scouts, Guides and bands would march with their banners around the locality. Few of these events survive today, and the walk at Warrington is the best-known and most spectacular of the survivors. Around 4000 people take part in the perambulation with pipe bands, marching bands, banners, saints statues and representatives from the schools and the local churches of all denominations. The Mayor cuts the ribbon in the magnificent Town Hall gates to allow the procession to pass through, then the civic party watch from a gazebo while the participants file past, before joining the tail of the group for the perambulation around town. It’s a much loved custom by the local community and very well attended, with a friendly family atmosphere.
Helpful Hints
Roads in the town centre are closed off for the procession so arrive in plenty of time- as it covers a large area it’s fairly easy to get a good view.
I was assured that the weather is always either extremely sunny or very wet- we certainly got lucky in 2019!
In 2024 it should be on Friday 28th June.

Walking Walking day 2013 – please could you confirm the date the walks will be taking place in 2013. Your events page states 31st June, obviously this is an error as we dont have a 31st June. I presume it will be held on Friday 28th June.

You’re quite right – I meant 28th June but had got on the wrong column when looking at my calendar! I have absolutely no connection whatsoever with the organisation of the event so strongly suggest you check the date by clicking on http://www.warrington.gov.uk/events just in case it’s subject to change for 2013. What time do the roads close?

I’ve just checked the Council’s website and it says that information on road closures will be available nearer the date so sadly we can’t get any further forward yet. However, you can keep checking the page at https://www.warrington.gov.uk/events/event/787/walking_day as that’s where it will appear first, and any changes to the initial plan should appear on there too. I haven’t any records of the date myself, but I expect it would be on Friday 28th June in 1991 as it’s usually the Friday nearest July 1st.
