Merrills is an ancient boardgame played by two people on a special board with nine counters each; it’s also known as Nine Mens Morris. The object of the game is to position 3 pieces in a line and remove the opponents players. The World Championships formerly took place each year at the Ryedale Folk Museum in Yorkshire evry September but the event lapsed during the late 1990s.

How were they able to call themselves The World Championships for Merrills? Is there a body that award that to them?
Good question Angharad- and I don’t have an authoritative answer sadly! There’s a whole chunk in wikipedia abut it at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_championship and I think as long as a competition is open to international entries and there isn’t one held somewhere else already, any event can be styled as a world championship of its type. I imagine the Merrils championship had no problems with rival events so they could call it a World Championship without any issues!
Best wishes,
