The Vale of Evesham is one of the major centres for British Asparagus production, and a festival has evolved to celebrate the local connection with the delicacy. While there are a number of events like asparagus auctions through the festival season which runs from late April to late June, the main focus is usually on St George’s Day, the start of the British Asparagus season, and on Spring Bank Holiday weekend. The St George’s Day festivities sometimes involve a classic car tour of the area (the Asparagus Run) by a giant round of asparagus accompanied by St George, Gus the Asparagus Man, Eve the Asparafairy and a host of other characters as well as morris dancers and musicians. The Spring Bank Holiday weekend usually involves Asparagus Auctions at the Fleece Inn at Bretforton, which again features the festival characters as well as plenty of music and dancing and a special asparagus-themed menu. You can sometimes even have your fortune told by the world’s only Asparamancer!
