The Battle of Stirling Bridge took place on 11th September 1297 in the Scottish Wars of Independence. In resounding victory for Scotland, the forces of William Wallace and Andrew Moray defeated the English as they slowed down to cross the narrow bridge over the River Forth; the magnificent National Wallace Monument was built nearby to commemorate the victory and can be seen for miles around. Today, the Society of William Wallace mark the anniversary with a Parade and Wreath laying ceremony, and the Monument hosts a special event over the whole weekend. You can expect a Pipe band and lots of flag waving, and the Saltire by the Bridge is renewed for the year. A Hoolie often rounds the day off.
Helpful Hints
In 2024 the March and wreath laying were on Sunday 15th September- 2025 details are yet to be confirmed .The March is a family-friendly easy walk, on the flat.
The Wallace Monument often stages commemorative plays and activities on both the Saturday and Sunday (normal admission charges apply- check the venue link below for details).
