Every August Bank Holiday Sunday, the World Bog Snorkelling Championships are held at Waen Rhydd peatbog at Llanwrtyd Wells. It’s a charity fundraising event which has been running since the 1980s and is a well established part of the local calendar. Competitors must don a snorkel and flippers then attempt to swim through the peat bog for 60 yards and back again (this doesn’t sound far but the conditions are atrocious and cold!) – the winner is the person who completes in the fastest time. In spite of the difficulties (or perhaps because of the extreme nature of the challenge) there are usually well over 100 contestants.

Next Bog Snorkelling should be on Sunday 24th August 2025.
If you want to enter the competition, the fee was £15 a head in 2019. Small parking charge on site or park in town and catch the Bog Bus there & back which runs at regular intervals for contributions to charity. Portaloos and refreshments are on-site.

There is also a similar competition but where competitors ride a mountain bike through the bog! This is usually held on the Saturday (24th in 2024).

You can enter online up to a week before the event, or just in person on the day. If you scroll down to the bottom of the Helpful Hints on the calendar customs page you can click through to the organisers page which has everything you need to know!

I don’t think that the organisers have put out links for an entry form yet for 2024 (guess they’re still recovering from the last one!) but I’ve added links on Calendarcustoms to the Green Events page which had a link for this year’s entry, and to the Facebook pages for the event.
