Changing the Guard is the name given to the daily formal ceremony in which the soldiers responsible for protecting the palace are relieved by the next group to take over the duty. When the Sovereign is in residence, groups of four sentries guard the entrance to the Palace, and when they’re away there are two on duty. Nowadays it usually happens at 11 am sharp on the forecourt at Buckingham Palace. Expect a group of soldiers, usually from one of the Regiments of Foot guards in fancy uniforms, to march to Buckingham Palace down The Mall from St James’ Palace, accompanied by a military band. The changeover ceremony lasts around three-quarters of an hour, and keys are handed over symbolising the transfer of responsibility to the new guards.

Ever popular with visitors, it’s advised that spectators should arrive by 10.15 to get a decent view. Attendance is free of charge and no tickets are required – just turn up.
