Padley Pilgrimage

Where: Grindleford, Derbyshire with walk from Grindleford Station and Mass at Padley Chapel nearby
When: Sunday nearest 12th July
Time: 3pm walk, 3.30 Mass

The annual martyrs walk at Padley is made in memory of Nicholas Garlick and Robert Ludlum who were catholic priests discovered at Padley Hall when practising their faith was prohibited by law under Queen Elizabeth I in 1588. This was the year of the Spanish Armada and there were fears of invasion by hostile catholic forces, so the government took a harsh stance and the pair were executed for treason at Derby. The pilgrimage commemorates their bravery by a short walk followed by a mass at the chapel. Expect richly dressed clergy with banners in a ceremony now well established for over 100 years.
