A local farmer, George Tayler, left a generous bequest in his will in 1852 to provide buns for local children at an annual service. It used to be held on the Wednesday after Easter but was moved to a Sunday in the 1980s to enable more children to attend without missing school. Now it takes place at the family service – these usually occur on the first Sunday of each month, so the Bun Service was usually in the first or second of these services after Easter and for some time it was held in the afternoon to make it easier for families to attend. The dating for this event is evolving but it’s still always a Sunday service. The original bequest was for bread, but the buns served now are delicious cakes, and they’re given out following the end of the service. All are welcome and it’s a very friendly event.
