Samhain means summers end and is a pagan festival celebrating the harvest which also has elements of a festival of the dead and darkness. Bonfires were lit and disguises worn and the day was believed to be propitious for divination. Today bonfires are still lit and it is associated with Hallowe’en, which falls on the same day and has similar origins.
