Where: | Stow on the Wold, Gloucs in fields on the Maugersbury Road |
When: | Thursday nearest October 24th |
Time: | All day |
This is a traditional fair for Gypsies and travelling people to meet up and trade and it dates back literally hundreds of years, the Charter being granted in 1476. It began as a sheep fair, the Cotswolds being prime country for the wool trade, but has evolved into a horse fair something like the June event at Appleby (see separate listing) with lots of equines, horse-drawn caravans and sightseers keen to soak up the atmosphere and buy from the many stalls. Travellers will be there for a few days around the Fair date, usually beginning to arrive on the preceding Monday, and will return again in May for the next of the bi-annual fairs (the May fair is the bigger of the two).

Helpful Hints
In 2025 it should be on Thursday 23rd October (to be confirmed).
In 2018 the fair was held a week earlier than normal and there was some confusion as to whether it would be on 18th or 25th – the date was only changed to 18th during October so many websites and other information sources still had the original date of 25th, which meant that the fair was smaller than usual. This confusion is rare.
Parking will be available on King George’s Field. Be prepared for muddy conditions underfoot!

No Davy – if you read the Helpful Hints section on the page you’ll see it was brought forward a week this year right at the last minute! It would normally be on this week but the organisers changed it this year.

Hi
I am wondering who to contact in regards to hiring a stall ?
Hi Kiran,
Here at calendarcustoms we don’t have any connection to the running of the Fair and we’re geographically a long way off so haven’t any local contacts for Stow either – try emailing the very useful Cotswolds Information site as they may well have some details they could pass on to you. Their page is at http://www.cotswolds.info/services/contact-us.shtml
Best of luck!
Averil
Where is the next horse after stow in November please
Hello,
I haven’t got contact details for them but I think there are some fairs later in the year though not many. The Wimborne one in Dorset was cancelled last year and I can’t find any date for 2016 so maybe it won’t be happening. Also near Leicester there’s sometimes a Christmas fair organised by Jim Walker. If you’re on facebook there’s a site at https://www.facebook.com/Romany-Heritage-239756389434356/ which might be able to help out with times and places. I couldn’t see any fairs listed on the Travellers Times website but might be worth keeping a look out on there at http://travellerstimes.org.uk
I’ve sent a couple of email inquiries out so if I find anything I’ll pass it on to you – sorry I can’t be more help!
Best wishes,
Averil
can you confirm the date for Stow fair October 2018,,ime getting the 18th now i said 25th?
Hi Mick, We don’t organise the fair but I’ve found several sites including the Travellers Times fair dates list and they all say 25th for 2018. Hope that helps!
Averil
Hi Mick, I’ve just seen another confirmation on Facebook that the fair is on 25th – on a comment on the Romany Heritage page which says the field will be open from 22nd with the fair on 25th,
Best wishes
Averil
Hello again Mick!
I’ve just been told that its the owner of the field who has decided that it’ll be a week sooner than normal this year so it will be on the 18th -but that was apparently just confirmed in the last day so lots of websites and other sources of information won’t know and will still have 25th as the date even though it’s not right. The information centre at Stow told me 25th when I rang earlier today, just before I got the message from Romany Heritage facebook page so I expect they’ll get people turning up the wrong week.
If I hear anything different I’ll keep letting you know but if Romany Heritage got their date from he owner of the field it must be right.
Best wishes,
Averil
Is stow horse fair on this Thursday 25th October or not? Thanks
No, it was brought forward a week by the landowner so it was last week (18th). I think it was smaller than normal as so many people expected it to be on 25th and the change on date was made so late.
Best wishes
Averil
Can anyone tell me how I apply to hold a stall here please? Many thanks
