Where: | Marhamchurch, Cornwall near the church |
When: | Monday on/after 12th August |
Time: | All day - Parade 2.30 |
St Morwenna’s founding of the village is celebrated every August at Marhamchurch near Bude. The Saint lived in Cell near the church and it is on this site that the locally elected Queen of the Revel is crowned by Father Time (whose real identity is kept secret, like Santa). After the coronation, the Queen leads a procession on horseback to the Revel Ground where there are entertainments which may include Cornish wrestling, fancy dress competitions, dancing and Cornish food; she traditionally rides a white pony (though when we went in 2014 it was a piebald) and is followed by her attendants on foot. Posies are on sale at a very reasonable cost and add an air of festivity to the onlookers.
Helpful Hints
Tasty cream teas will be on sale – highly recommended.
In 2025 it should be on Monday 18th August.

Do they still have the wooden barrel horse along which you have to move from tail to head without the barrel spinning and chucking you off.? I was about 9/10
I loved going on it . It would have been 1955/56 that we went to it when staying in Poundstock at the cottage belonging to my Grandfather. I tried to do it so many times 1p a go that I’m sure the man held it steady while I went along it. Anyway I eventually managed it.. We also had relations at Week Orchard farm Fred and Phyllis whose surname escapes me. I know that their children were Sheila Trevor and Wendy. I have no idea where they are now.
Hi Susan,
Thanks for your message! I’ve only been to the Revel as a visitor and I don’t remember the barrel horse- and it’s the kind of thing I’d have taken notice of if it had been there!! It sounds like quite a challenge- nearest thing I’ve been on like that is one of the bucking bronco mechanical bull rides, which chucked me off fairly fast at the local fair. If you want to check about the horse with the organisers, try sending a message through their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/marhamchurchrevel/
I expect there’ll be other people who remember it,
Best wishes,
Averil

Does anyone know the date for 2025 ? Will it be 11th or 18th August? I’d love to see it again.
Hi Dianne,
I’d expect it to be on 18th; I normally find that the date is finally confirmed by the organisers in the spring of the same year it’s happening- you may be able to get advance warning by contacting their own page at https://www.facebook.com/marhamchurchrevel/
Definitely double check with them as occasionally even quite predictable dates can move unexpectedly for any number of reasons!
Best wishes,
Averil
