Collop Monday is always the day before Shrove Tuesday and is not widely observed. In a similar frugal way to the consumption of eggs in the form of pancakes (to use them up before the fasting period of Lent), meat was eaten on Collop Monday as collops are chunks of meat. In Cornwall it has a different name : Peasen Monday because pea soup is the dish of the day. We celebrate by eating a bacon sandwich!

At college in Yorkshire we always celebrated Collop Monday with a meat dish and remembered that Lent was only two days away5
This is fascinating to me as an American. I love to learn about different customs, especially related to Lent and Pre-Lent. Thank you for this post, Bruce.
On Collop Monday, we would go round the local shops looking for gifts of sweets or suchlike in the Yorkshire village I grew up in.
One of the last shopkeepers to keep up this local custom was Mrs Woodhead of Woodheads news agency and tobbacconists in Meltham back in the 1970’s.
Now long gone.
This day Collop Monday is my day as it is my name
Enjoy!
