Musselburgh was an important fishing centre and this heritage used to be celebrated every September with the Fishermens Walk. The Fish Callant and Fishwife led a parade through the streets, which were decorated with a seafood theme. The custom lapsed in the later years of the twentieth century but the townsfolk continue to remember their fishing heritage with a Harbour Ceremony as part of their Festival Week in July (see separate article).
The Musselburgh Museum has further information and photographs about this parade. The walk always ended at Pinkie House with great jollifications and was welcomed by the owner of Pinkie, latterly Loretto School. The School archive also has photographs of this.
