A recent revival in the New Forest calendar is the Green Man Parade, starting at Burley Manor and processing through the village to New Forest Cider. May Day was celebrated in the village for decades to bring good luck and a bountiful harvest in the year to come, and the modern community celebration honours the tradition and folklore while bringing it up to date for today. The full-day event begins in the morning with headdress making workshops, then the Flag Raising at the Manor followed by the parade itself. Accompanying the Green Man himself and the Green Lady will be a Town Crier, morris dancers and drummers and they wend their way along to New Forest Cider. Dancing in the village pubs takes place during the afternoon, with a toast at 1pm, and with children’s entertainments such as Punch and Judy back at the Manor before the event is rounded off with a flag-lowering Closing Ceremony later in the afternoon.

Helpful Hints

In 2027 it should be on Saturday 9th May, and the parade takes around an hour with a rolling roadblock. It’s free of charge and all are welcome. Wear green!

There are public car parks in the village- details on the Facebook link below.
