St Swithins Day

Where: Countrywide
When: 15th July
Time: All day

The feast day of St Swithin (or Swithun, spellings differ) falls on 15th July and it is customary to watch the weather as traditionally, if it rains on St Swithins Day it will rain thereafter for forty days . The legend linked to this belief is that when the Saint’s bones were moved inthe Ninth Century, he showed his displeasure by causing a miraculous downpour which lasted for this period – so if it’s fair on this day, expect fair weather to follow and “St Swithins Day, if thou dost rain, for forty days it will remain.”
