horseman's sunday

Hyde Park was the setting for an annual cavalcade of around 100 equestrians who gathered for the Horseman’s Sunday service to celebrate riding in the city. Started in 1968, it was a Christian Blessing by the vicar of St John’s Church and it followed morning service at the church (for pedestrians only!). The horses assembled just outside the church entrance and lined up around Hyde Park Crescent ; the vicar performed his Blessing on horseback followed by the presentation of rosettes and a ride-past. You could expect horses and ponies of all sizes plus horse-drawn vehicles and lots of horse-lovers.

Helpful Hints

The last service took place in 2017 on September 24th and I have been advised that it is unlikely to be resumed any time soon.
