Carols2

The historic village of Ryton is the setting for an annual carol singing session with a difference. Each December on the Tuesday before Christmas Eve, the bells of Holy Cross Church ring a peal before the Brass Band strike up traditional carols. Songsheets are provided for the crowd and there are also performances by the very talented Caedmon Choir and perhaps mummers or sword dancers in a real midwinter festival. Afterwards many of the participants retire to the nearby Ye Olde Cross for further seasonal singing including some of the Yorkshire Carols (see separate article for more info on these).

Helpful Hints

You can download the songsheet from the event website and hear samples of the carols. A collection is made on the night in aid of local charities.

In 2024 it should be on Tuesday December 17th.

Thanks to Bob Wilson for the frosty photos (the rainy ones are my own!) and for drawing my attention to the event.
