The Morpeth Gathering is a modern festival of tradition and music celebrating everything Northumbrian, and the main event is the Border Cavalcade which commemorates the return of Lord Greystoke after the Battle of Otterburn in 1388. Expect flags, costumes, officials led by the Morpeth Gadgy and plenty of music as the procession makes its way through town, followed by street performances by various groups throughout the day. Other events during the festival include barn dances, storytelling and concerts, all with a Northumbrian flavour.
Helpful Hints
Programmes are available from the Tourist Information Centre on Bridge Street. The clock tower just off the Market Place has little figures of the Morpeth Gadgy on the top corners (in case you haven’t come across the word before, a gadgy is a local term for a man or bloke!) and you can even buy a bread representation of him at the Bakers shop on Newgate Street.
In 2025 it should be from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th April with the main day on Saturday 26th April (to be confirmed).
