Where: | Bedworth, Warwickshire at the Almshouses, All Saints Square |
When: | Friday in late May |
Time: | 10.30 am |
Nicholas Chamberlaine was the local landowner and rector at Bedworth for over fifty years during the late seventeenth century. Amongst other charitable concerns, he founded almshouses and schools whose legacy lives on in the town today. Founders Day is still celebrated annually, though it has evolved over the years and is now often referred to as Bun Day because the local schoolchildren are each given a tasty sticky bun at the special service of hymns and prayers. Four Church of England schools take part and the buns are distributed on the lawn in front of the Almshouses by dignitaries including the local MP; it’s the first event of the civic year for the new Mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth and usually takes place on a Friday so that all the schools can attend.
Helpful Hints
In cases of extreme weather, the buns are taken to the individual schools for distribution indoors. This happened in 2018.
In 2024 it was on Friday May 24th- 2025 date is yet to be announced.
