Berwick Curfew

At Berwick upon Tweed the curfew bell has rung at 8pm every day allegedly since the reign of William the Conqueror. Once a year  in July there is a race, the aim of which is for the competitors to complete their circuit of the mile-long Elizabethan town walls, whilst the bell is still ringing ( see Berwick Curfew Run article). The bell rings from the bellcote on the Town Hall. In the past it was common pratice for a curfew bell to be rung n settlements throughout the country, to let people know it was time to cover their fires and get to bed.Berwick is one of the select few places where this still happens.
