Advent Windows are illuminated displays which are lit in the build up to Christmas, beginning like Advent Calendars and candles on December 1st and generally with Christian themes based around the Nativity story. Usually a single window will be lit on the first, to be joined by another on the second and so on up until twenty-four on show by Christmas Eve, and frequently all the displays will remain in place for a few days afterwards for visitors to enjoy. One of the first settlements to adopt the practice in the UK was Askrigg in North Yorkshire, but there are examples all over the country including Greenwich, Gloucester and many more – and they grew in popularity during 2020 as an enjoyable and safe way for all ages to mark the season in a socially distanced way.
Helpful Hints
There are many around the country so check out local press/websites for details As a typical example, at Askrigg, if you follow the link below to the Facebook page, there should be a map showing locations of the windows which are on display daily from 1st December until 1st January, from 5 pm to 9pm. If you’re visiting from outside, you get the best experience the later you leave it in December as more displays are added each day.
