The feast of Corpus Christi is celebrated by the Catholic church and commemorates the Body and Blood of Christ. It’s a moveable feast on the Thursday following Trinity Sunday (eight weeks after Easter Sunday and one week after Whit Sunday), so varies in date according to when Easter falls and can be anywhere from May 21st to June 24th. For over 100 years the feast has been marked at Arundel Cathedral by a spectacular Carpet of Flowers up the central aisle, and a Procession of the Blessed Sacrament to the Castle.

Helpful Hints

In 2025 Corpus Christi will be on Thursday 19th June.

You can watch the Carpet being made at the Cathedral on the preceding Tuesday following the 10am Mass. The finished Carpet is on view from the Wednesday morning from 9.30 until 8pm and again from 9.30 on Corpus Christi itself. Mass preceding the Procession takes place at 5.30. Admission is free. Parking is available a short walk away in the castle grounds.

Other notable floral carpets are made at St John the Baptist at Upper Norwood and St Mary’s Bourne Street (respectively on Corpus Christi and on the Sunday following) and at All Saints Notting Hill for their Summer Festival in July. While the Arundel carpet isn’t therefor unique, it’s probably the most elaborate and well-known.
