The Battle of Byland was a victory for the Scots over the English and took place on 14th October 1322, part of the Scottish Wars of Independence. Edward II of England was in retreat after an unsuccessful campaign in Scotland, and Robert the Bruce took advantage of the weakened state of the English army to seize a significant victory on the precipitous slopes at Sutton Bank. A large monument was erected in 2022 to mark the 700th Anniversary, and now an annual living history weekend takes place at the Visitor Centre just over the road from the monument. There are activities for all ages including children’s crafts, arms and weapon demonstrations, cookery, falconry, guided walks on the battlefield, and tastings of the specially brewed beer.
