Where: | Brigg, Lincolnshire - town centre with Parade along on Station Road |
When: | 5th August (or Saturday 4th when 5th is a Sunday) |
Time: | Fair all day from 9.30 am |
The horse fair at Brigg has an ancient history dating back over 800 years to a charter granted in 1205. It’s a traditional trading event organised by the travelling community and you can expect to see lots of caravans, romany vardos, horses & ponies, and many trade stalls. It’s one of the larger events of its kind after the similar fair at Appleby in Cumbria (see separate article) and a feature of the event is the spectacle of the beautifully turned-out cobs being put through their paces through the streets of the town. The fair inspired the folk-song of the same name, made famous by Percy Grainger amongst others.
Helpful Hints
It’s usually held on 5th August but in years when 5th falls on a Sunday it moves to Saturday 4th instead (in 2018 it was on Saturday 4th August – that won’t happen again for some years).
Visitor parking is prohibited in Station Road during the fair but the main town centre car park will be open on Old Courts Road (when I visited parking for up to 2 hours was free but you still need a ticket from the machine). Beware of speeding equestrians in the streets! (and watch where you put your feet).

Is the fair on this year 2021 with covid etc.
Hi Juliette,
I haven’t been able to find any official confirmation so far but as far as I know it’ll be going ahead & I have no reason to think it’s cancelled (last year it went ahead even though some people wanted it to be cancelled, so I imagine it’ll be happening this year especially now that the restrictions are all lifted). Sorry I can’t be more definite about it – I haven’t got a contact for the organisers of this one. If I find out any more I’ll let you know,
Best wishes,
Averil
Hello please can you tell me what day caravans can pull on
Sorry Margaret I don’t know for sure – we haven’t any connection to the organisation of the fair so all I know is that 5th is the main day. Sorry I can’t be more help
Averil
