Bristol Jack in the Green is a modern revival of the old May custom of parading a greenery-clad flower-decorated man around town to welcome the spring. Jack is 9 feet tall and is accompanied by various companions including musicians and dancers. They roam the streets of the city all through the day before Jack “dies”, releasing the spirit of summer, at Horfield Common at around 4pm. There’s a display about the custom inside Mshed museum, outside which the festival begins.
Helpful Hints
You may be fortunate enough to be given a lucky piece of Jack’s foliage at the end of the day. It’s a really lovely day out!
In 2025 it should be on Saturday May 3rd.
In 2023 for one year only it moved from its usual day to avoid a clash with the coronation, so was on Monday May 8th .

NB: The procession now starts at the MShed and not the Arnolfini.
Thanks Claire – just in nice time for the weekend 🙂

Just a typo – you meant 2023 instead of 2022 to avoid coronation weekend. Cheers. Ron
That’s right- forgot to change the year!!
