Bromsgrove in Worcestershire is a settlement with an ancient Court Leet, an organisation which preserves ancient traditions and ceremonies including Fair Day, which was granted a charter by King John. Though the Court now has no legal powers, at one time it enforced rules for consumer protection including weighting bread to make sure bakers didn’t use short measures, and testing the products of local suppliers for their quality and wholesomeness. Today the members of the Court in their finery and robes, preceded by the Pipe Band, process through the town from the Housman Hall to the Housman Statue on the High Street where officials read the Charter, test the ale, meat, leather and bread from local businesses and give out awards. The stalls of numerous organisations line the High Street selling a wide variety of produce and crafts.

Helpful Hints

In 2025 it should be on Saturday June 21st (to be confirmed). It’s usually held on the Saturday nearest the midsummer & the longest day.

The Court Leet participate in a range of local activities around the year (see link below for details) but the main celebration is Fair day in June.
