Where: | Ducklington, Oxfordshire at St Bartholomew's Church and Fritillary Field |
When: | A Sunday in late April |
Time: | From 11.30 am (field opens) with bellringing & dancing in the afternoon from 1 pm |
The Snake’s Head Fritillary is a scarce wildflower which flourishes in a country meadow in Oxfordshire in the parish of Ducklington; it is believed that this is the only place where they now grow in quantity in the wild. Once a year the landowners allow access to the field in which the flowers grow and the day has turned into a fundraising event for the church with plenty of good food on offer and performances by Ducklington Morris Dancers and handbell ringers. The afternoon is rounded off with a special service at the church at 5.30 pm. Fritillary plants are usually on sale at the plant stall near the church.
Helpful Hints
While it’s usually around the same date in April, the event is subject to the flowers being in bloom so can vary a little with the season and may be altered close to the date to reflect this.
In 2024 it was on Sunday 14th April- 2025 date is yet to be announced.
The Fritillary Field is a short fairly level walk from the church, with a hard surface until you reach the gate onto the meadow.
Parking is available free of charge near the school.

Please could you tell me about parking. As I cannot walk far as I am disabled I need to know how far away from the fritillary parking is. Thank you.Gwen Price
Hi Gwen,
Your message has come to calendarcustoms, which isn’t connected to the organisation of Fritillary Sunday – you need to visit this page on the church website : http://www.ducklingtonchurch.org.uk/contact/ where you’ll find a number of contacts by both phone and email who should be able to advise – I haven’t been to this event yet (it’s on my to-do list) but I’d be very surprised if there aren’t special designated disabled spaces near to the fritillaries. Hope you have a lovely time!
Best wishes,
Averil
Wonderful idea , this website. Congratulations !
I was checking for Ducklington Fritillary Sunday, which isn’t mentioned on the Ducklingtom Morris site, but I hope to see them there…
Thanks Susanna,
Hope you had a good time – were Ducklington Morris strutting their stuff?
Best wishes,
Averil
