Where: | Countrywide including Hexham, Northumberland at the Sele First School |
When: | In the approach to Easter - Hexham near end of Spring Term |
Time: | Variable- Hexham 2 pm |

There seems to have been a resurgence of Easter Bonnet making in recent years, and all over the country making and displaying them is a popular activity, especially but not exclusively for children. Near where I live there is a parade organised by a local First School, who show off the creations they’ve crafted by walking in pairs hand-in-hand around the local vicinity and through the park adjacent to the school. The whole school takes part and as you can see from the photographs there are some elaborate and imaginative creations featuring a wide variety of springtime motifs such as eggs, lambs, chickens and flowers. Wherever you live there is likely to be a similar event, sometimes organised by youth groups, nurseries, schools and clubs so I’ve featured here the one at Hexham, which is well established as one of the activities at the end of the spring term.
Helpful Hints
In 2025 the Parade from Hexham Sele First School took place on Thursday April 10th- 2026 date is yet to be announced but it’s expected to be towards the end of the spring term just before the Easter holidays (and Easter is earlier in 2026, with Easter Sunday on 5th April). The children parade from the school, past Hexham Abbey, through The Sele park and back to school, then the nursery age children have their own mini perambulation around the playground. Sele is pronounced “seal”.
