Edinburgh Military Tattoo

Where: Edinburgh at the Castle Esplanade
When: August - not Sundays
Time: Weekdays 9 pm, Saturdays 6.15 pm & 9.30 pm

Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a spectacular annual event lasting three weeks with performances daily except Sundays every August.  It’s been ever-growing  since it began over 60 years ago and each year has a different theme, to keep it fresh for regular attendees. Expect massed bands, dancers and performers from all over the world, pipers, drums, and Scottish Regiments. It even gets televised – but you don’t get the atmosphere at home! It’s very popular with tourists and each performance lasts an hour-and-a-half, and the tickets sell well in advance. The backdrop of the Castle itself is used effectively for light projections and the very well practised performances are truly a wonderful sight to behold.

Helpful Hints

In 2025 it should be on from Friday 1st to Saturday 23rd August.

Each performance lasts 90 minutes but starting times vary according to day – weekdays are at 9pm, Saturdays at both 6.15 and 9.30. No performance on Sundays. Ticket prices are on the website (link below). Allow plenty of time to queue to get in as about 9000 other audience members will be joining you for the show (entry times will be shown on your ticket, usually about an hour before the commencement of the Tattoo).

If you like fireworks, try to go on a Saturday to the late performance.
