Where: | Grasmere, Cumbria at the Showfield on Stock Lane. |
When: | August Bank Holiday Sunday |
Time: | 10am. |
This annual event has its origins in the mid nineteenth century, when Grasmere had a hiring and sheep fair; nowadays the sports and show have taken over but it remains a celebration of Cumbrian tradition. As well as numerous track events, there are hound trails in the fells, gruelling fell racing, sheepdog dispays, music, terrier shows, tug-of-war and traditional Cumbrian Wrestling. The Sports is widely recognised as the main event in the Cumbrian & Westmorland Wrestling calendar.
Helpful Hints
In 2025 it should be on Sunday August 24th.
Admission fee ( in 2012) was £9 for adults. Plenty of parking available – just follow the signs. Wear waterproof footwear and be prepared for all kinds of weather (we had strong sunshine and heavy rain in 2012!).
If you want to buy the famous Grasmere Gingerbread you have to go into the shop in the village to buy it – well worth it (yum!).
