Horncliffe Salmon Procession

Where: Horncliffe, Northumberland at the Square, Fishers Arms and Playing Field
When: Second Sunday in January
Time: 7pm Onwards

Horncliffe is a charming settlement on the south bank of the River Tweed in Northumberland, and is the most northerly village in England. Horncliffe Events organise the annual Salmon Procession, which is a modern celebration with many traditional elements brightening up the dark days after the Christmas holidays. The Tweed is one of the premier salmon fishing rivers in the country, with a long season from February to the end of November, and has long been an important part of the local economy. The procession features elaborately crafted lanterns representing the noble fish, and dancing from local side Ragbag Morris with accompaniment from the Salmon City Blues Band. The procession begins at the west end of the village and there are several stops for dancing, music and refreshment including the Toast to the Salmon by the landlord at the Fishers Arms, the community pub, and the performance of special songs written for the occasion. The finale is the ceremonial burning of the lanterns on the playing field, followed by a buffet with bar at the nearby Memorial Hall (naturally with salmon on offer!).

Helpful Hints

In 2024 it was on Sunday 12th January- 2025 date is yet to be announced but likely to be Sunday 11th.

It’s very friendly, and if you arrive early and look keen you might be lucky enough to be offered an opportunity to carry one of the lanterns. Lantern making workshops take place prior to the event (check links below for details).

There’s a bucket collection on the night which goes towards future community events.
