Where: | Ringmer, Sussex at the Anchor Inn (formerly Firle, Sussex at the Ram Inn on The Street) |
When: | Good Friday |
Time: | Noon |
Sussex was famed for its tradition of skipping with long ropes on Good Friday – it used to happen at Brighton, Lewes and other locations but now the only survivor takes place outside the Anchor at Ringmer(from 2018-2022 it was at the Ram Inn at Firle and until 2018 it was at the Rose Cottage at Alciston). It’s turned into a local celebration with traditional music and morris dancing as well as good food and drink. Local sides Knots of May, Blackpowder Morris and Chanctonbury Ring Morris perform (whatever the weather!) before getting the ropes out for all to join in the skipping.
Helpful Hints
In 2025 it should be on Friday 18th April.
The Anchor was a new location for 2023 and hosted again in 2024.

Due to our discovery of the closure of The Rose Cottage in Alciston, we made the tricky decision of relocating to another fab local pub: THE RAM INN in FIRLE.
12noon – Good Friday 30th March 2018.
Thanks for the update – shame about the Rose Cottage, though. It was a lovely pub!
Best wishes,
Averil
According to the Rose Cottage website it is re-opening on 6th March!
Interesting! Maybe they’ll return there for the skipping next year? Thanks for letting me know.
I should have mentioned I checked the websites of Knots of May and Chanctonbury Ring Morris and they both state very clearly that for this year the event is definitely at Firle. Will double check for next time though just in case!
Rose Cottage has now reopened, but unfortunately we had to make the decision to move before we knew, so this year we will definitely be at The Ram. Watch this space for 2019! Thank you for helping us spread the news Averil 🙂
Katherine (Knots of May)
Thanks Katherine!
I’ll make sure I hassle you in plenty of time to see what you decide to do next year!

Hi,
thanks for updating the header, but the “Where” is still showing as The Ram Inn Firle.
Its at The Anchor Inn Ringmer in 2023. This year 2023 it will The Knots of May, Blackpowder Morris and Chanctonbury Ring Morris.
Many thanks Milly- must have missed the “Where” box when I updated the rest the other day but that’s amended now, so thanks for the heads-up!
Best wishes,
Averil
