Where: | Marldon, Devon at the Jubilee Meadow near the Church |
When: | 1st Saturday in September (formerly Last Saturday in July ) |
Time: | From 11.30 |
Marldon hosts a typical English village fete, with sports, crafts, competitions and entertainments. The unique aspect of this event is the Apple Pie Princess with her traditionally donkey-powered giant-apple-pie cart (which when we visited was pulled instead by local teenagers rather than a donkey). The origins of the event lie in the nineteenth century, when local trader George Hill used to provide a huge apple pie for the church fete, delivered by donkey-cart; the current fair is a long-standing revival, now itself nearly half a century old. The fair is officially opened at noon by the Apple Pie Princess, who cuts the apple pie to sell with clotted cream. Yum!
Helpful Hints
The event has moved date over time and was firmly fixed at the end of July for some years- however from 2022 it shifted too the first Saturday in September. In 2025 it should be on Saturday September 6th.

Dear Sir/Madam,
Correction for the date above is NOT the 9th of July 2011,but 30th of July 2011
Thanks for that, Neil! I’ve written so many articles now that I can’t remember where I got the wrong date from, but thks for putting me right -I’ve amended the post in light of wha tyou’ve told me so hopefully not too many people will have been led astray.
Kind Regards,
Averil
Dear Averil
Hi there, I’m not sure if you can help me but I hope so, I wanted to talk to somebody about setting up a stall to do children’s facepainting at thelovely Marldon fete (this July 2013).
It’s great fun and children love having it done…if you have any information on where I should go from here then please email me back or kindly call me.
With Kind regards
Hannah
Hi Hannah!
If you visit this page http://marldon.weebly.com/apple-pie-fair.html you’ll find the contact details for Dale Summers who was in charge of stalls last year so I expect she’ll be able to help (it’s under the heading Annual Event Takes Place on Jubilee Meadow on the left of the page).
Kind Regards & good luck with it!
Averil

Hi Helen,
Thanks for getting in touch! Calendar Customs hasn’t any connection to the organisation of the Fair but if you go to http://marldon.weebly.com/index.html and scroll down the page (just below the programme of events) you’ll see some contact phone numbers and I’m sure they’ll be able to confirm all the details. Good luck with your pie!
Best Wishes,
Averil

Top tip if you’re visiting the Marldon Apple Pie Fair… when you arrive, be sharpish about getting in the queue, to sample the delights of the apple pie with a dollop of fresh Devon cream before it runs out! When you set eyes on the magnificent apple pie you will see why – it’s seriously tasty!!
