Where: | Grindleford, Derbyshire with walk from Grindleford Station and Mass at Padley Chapel nearby |
When: | Sunday nearest 12th July |
Time: | 3pm walk, 3.30 Mass |
The annual martyrs walk at Padley is made in memory of Nicholas Garlick and Robert Ludlum who were catholic priests discovered at Padley Hall when practising their faith was prohibited by law under Queen Elizabeth I in 1588. This was the year of the Spanish Armada and there were fears of invasion by hostile catholic forces, so the government took a harsh stance and the pair were executed for treason at Derby. The pilgrimage commemorates their bravery by a short walk followed by a mass at the chapel. Expect richly dressed clergy with banners in a ceremony now well established for over 100 years.

From an old English Roman Catholic family and a frequent visitor to the annual pilgrimage I love to meet old and new similar recusants at this wonderful part of historic Derbyshire to recall and remember our fallen comrades. My beloved martyrs died but will never be forgotten.
Hello,
Could you inform me if there is a childrens pilgrimage and mass on Thursday 8th July 2021.
I thank you in anticipation.
Kind regards
James Whittamore
Dear James,
I couldn’t find any references online, so emailed Father Peter who usually organises it, and sadly there will be no children’s pilgrimage this year. Sorry to be the bearer of sad news!
Best wishes,
Averil
