Penryn Mock Mayor

Where: Penryn, Cornwall starting at Thirsty Scholar & Seven Stars, with elections at the Temperance Hall
When: A Saturday in late September (or sometimes early October)
Time: Usually 4.30 pm onwards with elections around 6pm

The recent revival of the Mock Mayor ceremony at Penryn harks back to the once-common custom of mock elections throughout the county, and in this case the real Mayor of the town is imprisoned! Speeches and the inauguration ceremony take place at the Town Hall, before the new Mock Mayor of Mylor, to give the full title in all its glory, processes around the streets and pubs (the latter to test the quality of the ale). Afterwards there is a festive supper back at the Town Hall. Mayhem and disorder are encouraged, and mob rule is the order of the day!

Helpful Hints

In 2024 it was on Saturday 28th September from 4.30 at the Thirsty Scholar, then the Seven Stars, with election 6pm in the Temperance Hall (timings may be flexible!). 2025 details are yet to be announced but it’s likely to be on Saturday 27th.
