Salisbury Rose Petal Sunday

Where: Salisbury, Wilts, at the Church of St Thomas and St Edmund, St Thomas Square
When: Sunday near 7th July
Time: Patronal Service at 10.15 am

Rose Petal Sunday at St Thomas’ Church in Salisbury is a modern but well established tradition which takes place on a Sunday in July, near to the 7th, which is the date when St Thomas Beckett’s remains were translated to a magnificent new tomb in Canterbury Cathedral in 1220. During the service the story of St Thomas and his sad end is entertainingly retold and acted out by the young members of the choir, after which the congregation follow the clergy procession out of the church. Sackfuls of fragrant rose petals are emptied from the top of the tower at the church, intended to spread blessings around the city as they float down like confetti on the breeze. The church is famed for its Doom painting, and for its foundation as a place of worship for the masons working on the new Cathedral at Salisbury.

Helpful Hints

In 2025 it should take place on Sunday July 6th (to be confirmed).

The service lasts around an hour, with the floral blessing to follow.
