Sherwood Twelfth Night and Fools Parade

Where: Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire at Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre
When: Saturday in early January
Time: 1pm onwards

The visitor centre in Sherwood Forest currently hosts a number of traditional events around the year centred on the Sheriff of Nottingham, nemesis of Robin Hood and his merry band. The first event of the New Year is when the Sheriff takes back control of the Forest following the Christmas amnesty with the outlaws, and includes a parade to the Major Oak where there’s a brief ceremony, some stave and sword fighting between the Sheriff’s guards and the outlaws, and lots of noise! You may spot the Sheriff offering largesse and tax rebates (in the form of chocolate coins), and you’ll meet favourite legendary characters such as Friar Tuck, Little John and of course Robin Hood and the Sheriff himself. Silly hats are encouraged and the event is very family friendly.

Helpful Hints

The Sheriff also hosts other events at significant dates in the calendar, including Wassailing and Crying Christmas (which is where he renounces his authority for the festive season).

In 2024 the event was on Saturday 6th January- 2025 date is yet to be announced. but likely to be 4th. Parking costs £5 per day, but the event is free of charge.

There’s ample parking at the Visitor Centre, which is near the village of Edwinstowe. The event begins at the amphitheatre near the cafe & shop.
