St Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland and his festival is always celebrated on this date, particularly in areas with links to Ireland or by people with Irish ancestry or connections. It has grown in popularity in the UK in recent years with widespread pub-based events involving Guinness consumption and often fancy-dress; special greetings cards are available if you hunt around.Expect plenty of shamrocks and leprechauns!

St Patrick’s day was being celebrated in central London yesterday in great style. There was a parade – which I missed – and Trafalgar Square was packed with stalls, overshadowed by a giant screen. The streets were full of people wearing St Patrick’s day hats, or green tee shirts, or with faces painted with the colours of the Irish flag. Everyone seemed to be marking a St Patrick’s weekend. I’d imagine the actual day – Monday – is a bit quieter. Thanks for this Paula and for the link – think I need to write up an article for this!Watch this space…
