Tywyn Race the Train

Where: Tywyn, Wales starting and finishing at Talyllyn Wharf Station
When: Saturday in mid August
Time: From 9.30 am

Race the Train is a cross-country running race where athletes attempt to reach the end of the course before the steam locomotive which follows roughly the same route alongside the runners, on a half-marathon journey to Abergynolwyn and back. The course begins and ends at the Talyllyn Railway station and while the train naturally of necessity follows the railway line, the runners encounter varied terrain on their course while the spectators shout encouragement to them from their carriages. The fastest runners and the train take about an hour and three quarters to complete the Rotary Challenge over a distance of 14 miles; there are several shorter races on the day including those for children. Entertainments and refreshments are available at the sports field next to the station, with prize giving during the evening. The historic railway was built to transport slate from the local quarries and is staffed nowadays by enthusiastic volunteers.
